Discord, a leading platform for online communities, is rolling out mandatory age verification for all users starting in March. This move follows similar implementations by other platforms like Roblox, reflecting a broader trend toward stricter age compliance measures online.
How Age Verification Works
When the system goes live, users will be prompted to verify their age via a pop-up window. The process requires submitting either a selfie or a government-issued ID. In some cases, both may be required if the system cannot accurately estimate age from a single image. Discord assures users that uploaded images are deleted after verification.
Once submitted, users receive a direct message categorizing them as either “teen” or “adult.”
Consequences of Non-Verification
Users who do not verify their age will default to the “teen” category. While teens will not be required to verify, adults who opt out will be restricted in their platform experience.
Teen Account Restrictions
Teen accounts will face the following limitations:
- Blurred Content: Sensitive material will be automatically blurred, requiring verification to unblur.
- Restricted Access: Age-restricted channels, servers, and commands will be inaccessible.
- Separated Inboxes: Direct messages from unknown users will be segregated into a separate inbox.
- Stage Access Limited: Users under 18 will be unable to speak on stage channels.
Severe Penalties for Underage Users
Users determined to be below the minimum age (13 in the U.S.) will be permanently banned from Discord. An appeal process is available for users incorrectly flagged as underage.
Global Rollout and Legal Compliance
Discord has already implemented age verification in the UK and Australia to comply with local regulations. The global rollout is scheduled for “early March.” This decision reflects growing pressure on platforms to enforce age restrictions, driven by safety concerns and legal requirements.
By default, all user accounts going forward will be teen-by-default. Adults must verify their age to access full platform features.
