Discord, the widely used messaging platform with over 200 million monthly active users, is introducing mandatory age verification for access to adult content and features, beginning in March. The move comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media platforms regarding teen safety and follows a 2025 lawsuit alleging the platform facilitated the grooming and sexual exploitation of a minor.
New Policy Details
Starting next month, all user accounts will default to “teen safety settings,” restricting access to adult spaces unless age is verified. While the “vast majority” of users will not be prompted to confirm their age, Discord will use an inference model analyzing account tenure and activity to assess age. Unverified or flagged accounts will be required to verify via facial scans or third-party services like k-ID.
Adults will retain full access to unfiltered content, age-gated channels, direct messaging, and voice/video features. Teens will remain in restricted settings unless verified. Discord acknowledges users may attempt to circumvent the system, but asserts the universal default settings will minimize bypasses.
