Spotify has launched SongDNA, a new feature that maps out the intricate relationships between songs, artists, and collaborators. This tool, now available to Premium subscribers on iOS and Android, goes beyond simple artist credits to reveal samples, covers, interpolations, and shared projects.
Deeper Dive into Music’s DNA
The core idea behind SongDNA is to connect listeners with the full ecosystem behind their favorite tracks. Previously, users could see who performed a song. Now, they can explore who influenced it, who sampled it, or who else the collaborators have worked with. This isn’t just about satisfying curiosity; it’s about revealing how music is built on a network of creativity.
For industry professionals, this feature provides a powerful discovery tool. Producers, engineers, and songwriters can use SongDNA to identify potential collaborators, uncovering hidden connections within the music world.
Visibility for Behind-the-Scenes Talent
The streaming era has often left the contributors behind the songs in the shadows. SongDNA aims to change that, giving songwriters, producers, and other creatives more recognition than ever before. This is especially important because many key players in music production don’t have the same public recognition as the performing artist.
From Code Leak to Reality
Spotify first teased SongDNA after references to the feature were spotted in the app’s code last October by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. The company officially confirmed its plans in November, promising a launch in early 2024 – and now, the rollout is underway.
Competition and Data Sources
SongDNA builds on data from WhoSampled, a community-built music database Spotify acquired last year. This positions Spotify in direct competition with TIDAL, which already offers similar interactive credits for song contributors. According to Jacqueline Ankner, Spotify’s Head of Songwriter & Publisher Partnerships, the feature is designed to “make it easier for fans to discover new music and see how songs connect…while giving songwriters, producers, and rightsholders meaningful recognition.”
The beta rollout is happening now, with a full global launch expected by April.
SongDNA isn’t just a feature; it’s a shift in how we understand music. It acknowledges that every song is a product of collaboration, influence, and a network of hidden connections. By making these connections visible, Spotify is reshaping the listening experience and giving more credit to the people behind the music.
