TCL has unveiled the Note A1 NxtPaper tablet at CES 2024, positioning it as a direct competitor to devices like the ReMarkable and Kindle Scribe. Unlike standard tablets focused on media consumption, the Note A1 is designed specifically for note-taking and focused work. Its software is stripped down to eliminate distractions, making it ideal for users who want a streamlined productivity experience.
Display and Design: Smooth Performance, Minimal Distractions
The Note A1 features an 11.5-inch LCD panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz, an unusually high specification for a device aiming to mimic the paper-like experience. This high refresh rate makes scrolling and writing exceptionally smooth, though it does come at the cost of battery life compared to traditional E Ink displays. TCL’s new “NxtPaper Pure” display removes the option to switch between color and E Ink modes, doubling down on a paper-only aesthetic.
The tablet’s build quality is also notable, constructed from aerospace-grade aluminum and measuring just 5.5mm thick. At 500 grams, it remains lightweight for extended use. A wide bezel on one side provides a comfortable grip, similar to the ReMarkable Pro and Kindle Scribe, and houses a customizable home button for quick access to key tools.
Stylus and Software: Enhanced Writing Experience
The included stylus boasts 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity, dual tips, an integrated eraser, and an X-axis linear motor for realistic feedback. This ensures a natural and precise writing experience that closely mirrors traditional pen and paper.
Under the hood, the Note A1 runs a heavily customized version of Android. TCL has deliberately removed many standard OS features to minimize distractions. A key feature is the Split View mode, allowing simultaneous reading, note-taking, and audio transcription – a powerful workflow tool. Microsoft apps like Edge and Copilot AI are pre-installed, further enhancing productivity. While it technically runs Android, TCL isn’t encouraging additional app installations, reinforcing its focus on a locked-down, distraction-free environment.
AI Integration: Streamlined Workflows
The Note A1 also incorporates AI features for added efficiency. Users can access AI summaries, automated meeting transcriptions, and AI-powered writing enhancements directly from the device.
The TCL Note A1 NxtPaper represents a niche but growing market segment: tablets designed for dedicated productivity rather than all-purpose entertainment. Its combination of a high-refresh-rate display, refined stylus, and streamlined software makes it a compelling option for users who prioritize focus and efficiency above all else.
