United App Now Displays Real-Time TSA Wait Times & Streamlines Travel

United Airlines has enhanced its mobile app with several key updates aimed at improving the traveler experience, most notably by integrating real-time TSA security wait times at major U.S. hub airports. The move addresses growing passenger concerns about unpredictable checkpoint delays, especially given recent staffing issues linked to government shutdowns.

Improved Security Wait Time Visibility

Travelers using the United app on iOS or Android can now view estimated wait times for standard security and TSA PreCheck lanes at airports in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. This feature provides a clear picture of what to expect, allowing passengers to better time their arrival at the airport. Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer, emphasized the app’s role in keeping customers informed during disruptions.

Enhanced Navigation & Connection Management

Beyond security wait times, the app now includes turn-by-turn directions to connecting gates, complete with walking time estimates and real-time flight status updates. United will also proactively notify passengers if a plane is held to accommodate tight connections. This is a significant improvement over relying on airport signage or gate agents, which can be confusing in large airports.

Automated Rebooking & Baggage Tracking

The app’s new self-service tools automate rebooking in case of delays or cancellations. Instead of waiting in line, passengers will be presented with alternative flight options, baggage tracking details, and eligibility for meal or hotel vouchers. This streamlines a traditionally stressful process, reducing friction for travelers.

Lost Baggage Assistance & Weather Updates

United has integrated Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature, allowing passengers to share the location of AirTags attached to their luggage with customer service if it’s lost. The app also now sends real-time radar maps to inform users how weather in one region can impact flights nationwide.

These updates demonstrate United’s commitment to leveraging technology to make travel smoother and more predictable. By providing real-time information and automated assistance, the airline is addressing common pain points for passengers.
