How mobile phones connect to the public switched telephone network

It’s a brick in your pocket now, but the concept started as a heavy, car-mounted radio set. A mobile telephone, or just a phone, is a portable device linking to a network to send voice, video, or data. It doesn’t work in a vacuum. It relies on the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

There are two main ways this happens. Cellular systems. Or global satellite-based telephony. Most of us live in the cellular world.

Why cellular beats satellite for crowds

Satellite works. It’s just not efficient for dense cities. Cellular systems use a trick called frequency reuse. They split coverage into discontiguous cells. When demand spikes, those cells split into smaller ones. This lets providers serve millions of people in a metropolitan area without running out of airwaves.

Satellite doesn’t do that. It’s one-to-many in a different way. Cellular is built for density.

The history you probably forgot

The U.S. started connecting mobile transmitters to the PSTN in 1946. AT&T introduced mobile telephone service then. It wasn’t the phone you recognize today. It was clunky. Expensive. Niche.

Popularity didn’t hit until the 1980s. That’s when cellular service went mainstream. By the early 21st century, billions of people owned one. The shift was total. We stopped thinking of them as telephones and started thinking of them as computers. But the core function remains. Connecting to the PSTN. Via cells. Or satellites.
